Awesome spring eats

05 Sep 2017

Foodies will surely agree spring is by far the best season of the year. The vegetables seem more crisp and green, the herb gardens more bountiful and there are countless ways to entertain outdoors in the mild, warm sunshine. Read on for a run-down of our favourite ways to eat our way through spring.

Barbecue

Fire up that grill because barbecue season has kicked off! From sticky ribs and seasoned steaks to corn on the cob, hotdogs, marinated chicken and fresh fish, it all tastes better barbecued. But it’s more than the primitive act of sizzling fresh meat over an open flame that makes barbecuing the number one reason we’re excited for spring’s return. We also love that grilling brings together friends and family, allows us to dine alfresco and indulge in other spring treats like handfuls of fresh herbs and bowls of crisp garden salad.

Picnics

Now’s the perfect time to pack a feast and head for one of Perth’s glorious outdoor spaces, be that the beach, river or leafy parkland. Picnics bring together good friends over yummy food, and are a great way of entertaining without all the mess. Choose treats that are best enjoyed warm or at room temperature, ensure they’re easy to hold by hand, and lay it all out at once allowing everyone to graze at their leisure. Rather leave it to the experts? Stress less by ordering one of The Black Truffle’s bountiful picnic hampers.

Farmers’ markets

You can visit a farmers’ market year-round, but the warmer, brighter mornings make strolling through the stalls laden with locally grown fruit and veg, freshly baked bread, free-range eggs, home-made pastries and exotic international breakfast cuisines that much more enjoyable. Plus, at farmers’ markets you can chat with the people who actually make and grow your food while mixing with members of your local community. Remember to take your furry family members and your own bags – farmers’ markets are all dog friendly and promote environmentally friendly shopping. Brunch

Is there anything more soul pleasing than a sunny spring Sunday morning? Finally, we can hit up the alfresco section of our favourite café for long, lazy bunches. Grab the paper, order your favourite coffee and settle in for a morning filled with many of the season’s best produce including asparagus, free-range eggs, berries, baby greens and fresh herbs.

Spring vegetables

Peas and pea shoots, asparagus and bunches of rich, green, leafy spinach – now that spring’s here, the dreary days of root vegetables are finally over! Use them to create fresh salads (try mint, peeled broad beans, fetta and lemon juice), nutritious breakfast sides (lightly grill asparagus and quickly blanch green beans), or create light spring soups (try blending baby peas, pea shoots and coriander together with a dash of chilli).

Juices

‘Tis the squeezing season! With sweet, young, leafy greens readily available, now’s the perfect time to get back into a healthy juicing routine. Combine fresh fruits with green vegetables and herbs like wheat grass, been shoots, rocket, basil, mint, kale and celery to create green juices that not only taste great, but make you feel a million bucks too – dark leafy greens help with the digestion of meat and fatty foods. Don’t have time to squeeze your own? Pop into The Black Truffle to discover the great selection of cold-pressed, fresh juices.
