Father’s Day gifts for foodie dudes

22 Aug 2019

What father (or father figure) doesn’t love food? Find something he’ll truly appreciate among this selection of tasty Father’s Day gift ideas.

Shopping for dads is notoriously tricky. With draws crammed with socks and jocks, sheds piled with power tools, shelves full of books and wardrobes stuffed with business shirts there seems very little that many fathers want (within budget) or need.

Regardless, on the first Sunday of September many of us want to show our fathers (and father figures) our sincere appreciation. Here at The Black Truffle, we’re well aware that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach so, if you’re struggling to find an appropriate gift, read on for our top picks for dudes who appreciate their food.

1. For Dads who love spice

We love spice almost as much as we love anything local, which is why the Dingo Sauce Co. range of hot sauces is top of our list. Handmade in North Fremantle by well-known local chef, Leigh Nash, this artisan range of chilli sauces is born from Nash’s love of Asian flavours and all things chilli-related. While we love everything in the range, we can’t go past Nash’s own take on sriracha – the super-hot version will blow your socks off!

Dingo Sauce Co., range starts from $14.95

2. For Dads who love the great outdoors

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give is our time, so why not spoil Dad with a picnic? But treating dad to a tasty spread doesn’t have to be a time-consuming exercise for you. At The Black Truffle we’ve prepped and packed hundreds of hampers for Perth picnickers, so we know exactly what it takes to create the perfect spread. From breakfast hampers to long lunches for small and large groups we have a hamper to suit all occasions.

If you’re simply looking for afternoon nibbles, our grazing boards are perfect and feature local cheeses, olives, charcuterie (WA free-range ham, Italian prosciutto di Parma and salami), and antipasto goodies.

Grazing boards: Small, $45; large, $85; or speak to our friendly staff to discuss your picnic needs.

3. For Dads who love meat

If there’s a more blokey food than biltong, we’re yet to find it! The Wagyu Biltong Co.’s range of perfectly cured biltong takes dried beef to the next level. Made in WA using Australian Wagyu beef cut from the silverside part of the animal (to ensure lovely long cuts of meat), the biltong is cured using malt vinegar and fresh herbs and spices then carefully dried. For ultimate enjoyment, air the meat for a further 12 hours before eating it as a snack on its own, or with a generous pour of beer or wine. There are a number of different products in the range to choose from.

The Wagyu Biltong Co., range starts from $11.95/packet

4. For Dads who love condiments

The Preservation Co.’s range of hand-crafted sauces and pickles is perfect for dads who like to add a little something extra to their plate.

We have three favourites in the range. The first is Hickory Brussels Sprouts. Taking its inspiration from traditional roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon, this pickle uses hickory smoke to create a similar meaty flavour (although the product is actually meat-free). The sprouts are great on their own, tossed through a stir-fry or used to garnish a hearty Bloody Mary.

Speaking of Bloody Marys, we also love the jarred Bloody Mary Mix. Simply add vodka to this spicy, smoky pre-mix and you’ve got one of the manliest cocktails around.

Finally, our third fav is the Red Eye Chipotle Sauce. Made using cold brew coffee – which provides a powerful roasted flavour that matches perfectly to the smokiness of the chipotle – it’s the ideal partner for steak and ribs.

Hickory Brussels Sprouts, $15.95; Bloody Mary Mix, $15.95; Red Eye Chipotle Sauce, $15.95

5. For dads who love coffee

If the dad in your life loves coffee as much as we do, he’ll need his own reusable mug. Not only will he be reducing his contribution to landfill (by eliminating single-use coffee cups from his routine), he’ll look stylish doing it with a Frank Green ‘keep cup’.

Designed with a curve to fit comfortably in your hand, these are among the best looking reusable and fully recyclable cups on the market. The Black Truffle stocks a variety of colours in ceramic and original (made from recyclable co-polymer). Better still, The Black Truffle offers a free coffee of your choice with each Frank Green purchase.

To beef up your Father’s Day gift, we suggest teaming your cup with a coffee gift card, which treats Dad to 10 brews (you only pay for nine).

Frank Green cups: 8oz original, $32.95; 12oz original $34.95; 10oz ceramic, $41.95
