Our top 10 winter pies

26 Jun 2020

Puff, short crust, savoury or sweet –  we’re all about pies this winter. Here’s why, and what you can expect to find in store.

Who doesn’t love pie!? It doesn’t matter if you’re a sweet tooth, or prefer your pie savoury, there’s a flaky, crumbly pastry and luscious, silky filling to suit all tastes. Here at The Black Truffle, we’ve taken our favourite fruity desserts, and slow-cooked casserole and wrapped them in parcels of flaky puff pastry.

Here are the top 10 ways we’re enjoying pie this winter.

CHICKEN PIES

1. Chicken mushroom pie

Perfect for eating on a chilly winter’s evening alongside a generous serving of mash, our chicken and mushroom puff pastry pie (all our pies are made with premium pastry from Perth’s own Empire Pastry) is crammed with thick slices of mushroom, free-range chicken and a creamy, mushroomy sauce.

2. Creamy chicken and vegetable

Just like your Nanna’s chicken pot pie, this comfy classic features our signature puff pastry, a rich creamy sauce filled with fresh winter veg and generous chunks of free-range chicken.

3. Chicken chasseur pie

Hailing from France, chicken chasseur (which means ‘hunter’s chicken’) is a rich stew made with generous pieces of tender chicken braised in stock, tomato sauce, shallots, mushrooms and herbs like tarragon and parsley. Our chicken chasseur pie features flaky puff pastry filled with our own in-house version of this classic French favourite.

BEEF AND LAMB PIES

4. Braised beef cheek and mushroom

Thrilled to see live sport back on the telly? Nothing pairs better with footy than a good, old fashioned meat pie and you won’t find one better than our braised beef cheek and mushroom, a hearty slow-cooked red wine braised beef paired with juicy onion and mushroom.

5. Beef bourguignon pie

Just like chicken chasseur, beef bourguignon is also a popular French bistro dish. And just like the classic, our beef bourguignon pie features melt-in-the-mouth chunks of tender beef cooked in a rich red wine gravy with mushrooms and other winter veg.

6. Beef, bacon and potato pie

Our version of the classic cottage pie, this winter warmer is a cosy puff pastry parcel filled with a chunky beef, bacon and gravy sauce, topped with rustic mashed potato.

7. Braised beef red wine and vegetable pie

We’ve taken a hearty, traditional slow-cooked beef and red wine casserole, added fresh winter veggies and turned it into fluffy, flaky puff pastry pies that are sure to be a hit with the whole family.

8. Braised lamb and vegetable pie

Love lamb? Our braised lamb and vegetable pie – buttery, flaky puff pastry filled with a chunky lamb shank and winter veg ragu – promises to have you drooling (and craving more!).

SWEET PIES

9. Apple and rhubarb pie

With a crunchy, buttery crumble topping, our apple and rhubarb pie taste’s just you’re your Grandma’s and is jammed with sweet, slowly stewed apples and tangy in-season rhubarb (one of our favourites this time of year).

10. Apple and mixed berry pie

If berries are more your bag, treat your tribe to one of our family-sized apple and mixed berry pies. Also topped with our house-made crumble, it tastes incredible heated on its own, or paired with a creamy vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of double cream.

We make a selection of fresh pies in-house daily using premium pastry from Empire Pastry and only the freshest ingredients. This means our pies can be enjoyed immediately, or popped in the freezer for another day. Call in to see which are available – we make all our savoury pies in individual and family sizes, and our sweet pies in family size ($9.50 each for individual, and $22.95 for family pies).
