It’s time we stop avoiding calorie-rich peanut butter. Not only is it delicious, this ‘healthy fat’ is full of protein, vitamins, minerals and can even help you control your weight. Here, Bert Veldman, creator of the all-natural range of Nuttabutta spreads, explains why he’s in the peanut butter business.
How did you get into the peanut butter business and what were you doing beforehand?
The peanut butter business grew quite naturally from our original food business, Bowlagranola.
We encountered a wave of people seeking healthier food options. More and more people are meal prepping and being ultra-conscious about the foods that they are consuming. With more people looking to cut processed foods that are high in sugar and other additives, peanut butter seemed like a great idea. And plus… who doesn’t like peanut butter?
How quickly has your business grown?
Nuttabutta has been on the shelves for only nine months, but we’ve been blown away by the response. We’ve had great feedback from customers, also at local farmers markets. We started with just a smooth blend, but launched our crunchy blend two months ago. It has quickly become a favourite and now outsells our deliciously creamy blend three-to-one. To be honest, we’re undecided about which blend we like best! Some days we love the gorgeous texture of our smooth blend, but that crunch of our other blend is hard to ignore.
What makes Nuttabutta unique compared to its competitors?
Our peanut butter tastes fresh and real. It also has a unique texture compared to other natural peanut butters. We’d like to think that the locally made, small batch element is what helps our peanut butter stand out, as well as the beautiful labels.
What are the health benefits of peanut butter?
As with all foods (even the healthy ones), natural peanut butter still needs to be eaten in moderation. Packed with energy, good fats and Omega-9 (present in the Australian hi-oleic variety of peanuts we use), natural peanut butter has plenty of health benefits. It also acts as a perfect hunger-killer when the munchies hit. Just a teaspoon of peanut butter can deter you from reaching for that less healthy snack option.
Are there any peanut butter myths or mistruths you’d like to bust?
Peanut butter does not make you fat!
What’s next for the business? Do you have any exciting plans in the pipeline?
We are working on some cool things at the moment but the exact details are top secret.
Let’s get creative. What are some surprising uses for peanut butter?
Wow! So many options – smoothies, raw caramel slices, bliss balls, satay sauce (see recipe below) – the list is endless. Plus, there’s not a lot you can’t dip in peanut butter.
Finally, how do you best enjoy your peanut butter?
This is going to sound boring, but I love nothing more in the morning than a thick layer of PB over a rice cracker and then a good amount of granola sprinkled over the top.
